What to do if Your Home Heating Oil Tank Leaks ?
AES Marconi believe that the speed and quality of the response to a contamination incident is crucial in minimising the long term impact of a spill and can significantly limit the long term clean up costs.
Safety First – Always consider your personal safety when responding to a spill, only attempt to respond to a spill directly, if it is safe to do so. If in doubt withdraw and contact AES Marconi who have highly trained staff ready to mobilise 24 hours a day.
Do not use detergents or a hose to wash spilt oil away; this will only make the pollution worse, increasing the area of contamination.
Containment – This is the immediate action to prevent or mitigate the impact of the spillage. Where it is safe to do so, this action could be to stop the source of the leak.
Work to limit the spread and impact of the spill by the use of absorbent materials, ensuring to protect drains and nearby watercourses. AES Marconi utilise highly specialised equipment and oleophilic pads and booms to control the spread of oil contamination.
Recovery –Once effective containment action has been implemented, works to recover the spilled oil should commence, and this could comprise recovery by absorbent materials or via pumping and storage. Care should be taken to avoid cross contamination and any recovered product should be stored in designated areas in suitable containers. Disposal of materials should take place in accordance with Waste Management Regulations with the duty of care documentation.
